What is 1.4112 (X90CrMoV18)

1.4112 is a chromium steel with high hardness, excellent wear resistance and good edge retention, which is due to its higher carbon content. However, this comes at the expense of corrosion resistance. The steel contains molybdenum and vanadium and belongs to the group of magnetic steels. Due to its mechanical properties, 1.4112 is also known as knife steel.

Its corrosion resistance is higher than that of grade 1.4125, which has a carbon content of approximately 0.95%. As a result, this material offers higher hardenability.

1.4112 is popularly known as AISI 440B.

Corrosion resistance: In the quenched and tempered condition, this grade is corrosion-resistant to water and chemical products due to its high chromium content.

Heat treatment 1.4112

Heat Treatment
Heat treatment provides high hardness and good corrosion resistance.

Forging: Forging can be carried out between 1100°C and 800°C. Slow cooling is then carried out in the furnace, in ash or in air.

Welding: This material is unsuitable for welding. There is a risk of hardening cracks.

Soft Annealing: Soft annealing is carried out at 780°C–840°C, followed by cooling in the furnace or in air.

Stress Relieving: Stress relieving is carried out at 600°C–650°C, followed by furnace cooling.

Hardening: Grade 1.4112 can be hardened at 1000°C–1050°C. Cooling is carried out in air, oil or a hot bath.

Tempering: Tempering can be carried out at 100°C–500°C.

The processing with the saw is a mechanical processing of the material, which results in a significantly lower unintended deformation and increased hardness for the existing structure, such as the thermal cutting. Thus, the machined workpiece has a homogeneous structure even at the edge, which does not change in the continuation of the material.

This circumstance allows immediate finishing of the workpiece with milling or drilling . So it is not necessary to anneal the material or make a similar operation beforehand.

1.4112 is a corrosion-resistant knife steel, but it can still rust under certain environmental conditions.

1.4112 can be hardened to a surface hardness of 59 HRC.

1.4112 is not suitable for welding.

1.4112 steel has an average density of more than 7.70 g/cm³.

The tensile strength is well above 1,100 MPa, depending on the location from which the test specimen is taken.

1.4112 is a ferromagnetic material and is therefore magnetizable.
